Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill: The oil slick in the Gulf of Mexico is not having an impact on the beaches of Sarasota, Siesta Key or Venice. Sarasota has less than a 1% chance of oiling according to NOAA. Currents in the Gulf of Mexico ironically are putting the Florida Keys and the east coast of Florida at greater risk than the Suncoast. Sarasota County is monitoring the movement of the oil. A research vessel west of Tampa Bay, two ships west of Key West and a C-130 aircraft flying from the St. Petersburg Naval Air Station are keeping daily track of the spill.
